The release of the new version WoltLab Suite 5.2 is somewhat around the corner and we would like to inform you about the new license type. We’ll transition from the current system of licenses obtained through a one-off payment, limited to the current version at the time of purchase, to a system of rental licenses instead.
The new rental license will run for one year, during which you will automatically receive access to any new version released, as well as assistance and technical support via our ticket system. At the end of the term, the rental license ends automatically, but can be extended at your discretion for another year at a time.
If you decide against renewing the rental license, you still retain the right to use the last version that your license has access to. Your installation remains functional without interruption, even if you do not extend the rental license. However, access to new versions and the ticket support is reserved for active rental licenses only.
In recent years, technical and legal changes have required timely and, in some cases, extensive modifications, such as the EU-GDPR, whose complexity make them unsuitable for shipment within bugfix releases due to their impact on system stability. Starting with WoltLab Suite 5.2, we’re shifting our strategy for the further development of the software: New versions will be released at shorter intervals, consisting of a more compact range of changes compared to previous releases. New features and improvements to existing features will be available much faster, and the strong focus on backward compatibility makes upgrades as easy and hassle-free as possible.
The prices listed below will become effective with the release of the stable version of WoltLab Suite 5.2, expected in December 2019.

Facts about the Rental License
1. What happens to my installation when the rental license expires?
Your installation will remain functional regardless, you can continue to use it without restrictions, and you will continue to receive security updates for this version.
However, access to new versions and ticket support requires an active rental license, but you can renew your expired rental license for another year at your discretion if necessary.
2. How Long Is the License Valid? Is It a Subscription?
The rental license is valid for one year and can optionally be renewed for another year at a time. It is entirely up to you whether you want to renew the rental license, there is no subscription.
3. What Happens to Existing Licenses and the Legacy Platinum License?
Old licenses up to and including WoltLab Suite 3.1 remain unaffected, the license terms valid at the time of purchase still apply. The conditions of the new rental licenses only apply to new licenses or licenses that have been extended to include access to this new version.
The Platinum licenses remain valid and automatically receive access to the new version WoltLab Suite Forum 5.2.
